All children will be placed on a preventive program that includes an on-going evaluation of oral hygiene, teeth cleaning, application of fluoride treatment, monitoring the eruption of the permanent teeth, and the need for orthodontics. We will also discuss nutrition and the best diet for your child. Dr. Ernie recommends checkups be done every four to six months in order to be able to note any changes in your child's oral health and to prevent more extensive and costly treatment in the future.
Dr. Prieto will perform a risk-assessment to evaluate if your child is a candidate for the placement of dental sealants. Sealants are an effective, minimally invasive treatment to protect the chewing surface of permanent, back teeth from cavities. They act as a smooth barrier to help bacteria and food particles from collecting in a tooth's grooves and penetrating into the enamel. Dental sealants can be painted on in a 30 - 45 minute appointment two weeks after a dental cleaning.
Custom-Fabricated Athletic Mouthguards
Since 50 - 80% of all dental injuries involve the front teeth of the upper jaw, a child should wear mouth protection while participating in any activity with a risk of falls, collisions, or contact with hard surfaces or equipment. Although customized mouthguards may cost a bit more than preformed, or boil-and-bite mouthguards, they are more comfortable and more effective in preventing injuries. A mouthguard that is not worn, will not prevent injuries.
